Biomass Satellite Launch 2025 is Scheduled for April 2025
The European Space Agency (ESA) has confirmed the launch date of its Biomass satellite for 29 April 2025. As part of ESA’s Earth Explorer programme under the Living Planet framework, the mission is being developed in collaboration with Airbus Defence and Space.
The satellite is equipped with a unique P-band synthetic aperture radar (SAR) capable of penetrating dense tropical forests. It is designed to generate global 3D maps of above-ground forest biomass, enabling researchers to estimate carbon stocks with unprecedented accuracy.
Advancing Radar Remote Sensing and Climate Monitoring
Biomass will address key knowledge gaps in forest carbon dynamics, supporting efforts in deforestation monitoring, climate model validation, and environmental policy. The data will be publicly available and is expected to benefit multiple scientific domains.
This mission represents a major step forward in radar remote sensing, contributing to long-term global observation of Earth’s ecosystems.
Researchers working on biomass estimation, radar remote sensing, or forest carbon monitoring are invited to submit their findings to Recent Advances in Remote Sensing or Remote Sensing Communications.
